Understanding Positive Behaviour Support

A person-centred way to understand behaviour and improve quality of life.

Positive Behaviour Support is a person-centred approach that seeks to understand why behaviours of concern occur and how an individual’s quality of life can be improved. Behaviour may be influenced by communication needs, health, sensory experiences, routines, relationships and the surrounding environment. Understanding these factors can guide supportive, practical responses.

PBS is not simply about stopping a behaviour. It also focuses on teaching useful skills, adapting environments, respecting choice and helping the people around an individual provide consistent support.
